Tarot in the 21st Century

Tarot picture for PostTarot Evolution

The Tarot originally started life as a pack of 78 playing cards back in Europe around the mid-15th century. From around the 18th century onwards, the Tarot increasingly started finding usage as a tool of divination amongst occultists and mystics. In it’s present state of evolution the Tarot has a lot of distinctive characteristics. Let’s take a look at what Tarot’s like in the 21st century!

Tarot is about informed guidance

In its current avatar, whilst Tarot still continues to be used as a form of divination, modern day Tarot readers prefer to see the Tarot as a tool of guidance first and foremost ahead of its fortune telling ability. You’ll find that a lot of modern Tarot readers prefer not to do predictive readings in the sense of “When will I meet Mr. Right?” or “When do you see me getting a job?”…etc. The modern day Tarot reader prefers to look into things such “What’s getting in the way of meeting Mr. Right?”, or “What are the things you need to do to increase your chances of getting this particular job?” for example. This subtle rewording has some very powerful effects which inturn transform the Tarot from a simple fortune telling tool to a map of empowered living. The concept of ethics is also slowly gaining foothold in Tarot readings. Ethical tarot readers do not dispense medical or legal advice for which there are plenty of qualified professionals otherwise available.

Tarot is not a scary instrument of impending doom

Tarot  is often times viewed as being mysterious, spooky and “evil” and continues to be misunderstood in many quarters even today. It’s interesting to note that everything in nature is embedded with a “light” and a “shadow” aspect and it’s really about which aspect you feed and honor in your life. Do you, for instance, speak your mind when you see that justice is not being done or do you go around judging everyone and assume an exaggerated moral superiority – both are light and shadow aspects of the same single quality. There is a tendency to misuse Tarot in some quarters and this is not unique to the world of Tarot. At the end of the day whether you are a reader or a querant, follow aspects that are of truth, kindness, justice, compassion and faith and you will always be on the right track.

Tarot is mobile, portable and downloadable.

The really good thing about Tarot in the 21st century is that it’s increasingly getting mobile and portable. You no longer need to visit a Tarot reader face-to-face to get a reading. The power of modern technology means that you can easily get a reading on the phone or on Skype or even via email. Distances don’t limit how effective a Tarot reading can be. Additionally the huge amount of resources on the net on Tarot means that a student has access to unlimited information to support his or her interest in learning this arcane and wonderful art. Student, Novice, Practitioner or Teacher, there’s something out there for everyone!

Throughout the coming weeks, I’m looking forward to sharing with you everything I know about the Tarot. I love hearing from you so feel free to drop comments, questions and feedback in the “Leave a comment section” below! Until the next episode of the weekly Tarot blog, have fun and stay safe!

A Return to Love – Marianne Williamson

I just had to share this very beautiful poem from Marianne Williamson. My blessings to everyone ..another new day …another great opportunity to make a difference.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Let your light shine.

Let your light shine.

Introducing Buddha Doodles

The first time I saw a Buddha Doodle, it really touched my heart. There’s something so intrinsically feel- good about these whimsical illustrations created by the uber talented cartoonist Molly Hahn (aka Mollycules). Buddha Doodles already has quite a fan following, and I’m delighted to start including it as a regular feature on my blog. There’s always plenty of room for more sunshine here at An Urban Mystics’s Blog 🙂

Molly’s mission is to “shed light on the inherent wisdom and joy that is available to each and every one of us at any moment”. I’d say she’s doing a pretty darn good job. Read more about Molly and see more of her work at http://buddhadoodles.com/

Have fun!

Enlightenment Is Like The Moon by Dogen

Enlightenment is like the moon reflected on the water.
The moon does not get wet, nor is the water broken.
Although its light is wide and great,
The moon is reflected even in a puddle an inch wide.
The whole moon and the entire sky
Are reflected in one dewdrop on the grass.

Space Clearing – Declutter Your Life Now, Part I

Sometimes clearing the spaces that we inhabit, whether it is our home or our office, is all it takes to kickstart our life and give it some much needed energy and vitality. The places that we dwell in and what we make of them are reflective of who we are and how we live our lives.

Do you find that you are unable to move forward in your career despite trying as hard as you could. You despair that opportunities do not come to you easily. Maybe your relationships need work. Or you’re forever running over budget, and money just seems to walk out the same door it came walking in through. Your love life could do with a rehaul. Check that. Maybe your entire life could do with a rehaul.

Look closely at your home today for it holds vital clues to the state of your current existence. Making simple and effective changes to your living spaces in turn produces equally effective changes in your existence and how you move forward in your day to day living.

Decluttering Your Life

Does your home have piles and piles of clutter in the form of old mouldy papers, magazines and files you no longer need. Are there vast expanses of cds, books, clothes, stretching to as endless as the sea. Are you afraid to let them go. Maybe you’re a hoarder. You desperately cling to what was past and gone before. When you hold onto things in your living spaces which are old and have outrun their use, you broadcast a message out into the Universe saying you are not prepared to receive new opportunities. Simply because all the space that you have in your life is currently occupied by the past. You hesitate to let go and you do not trust the Universe to provide for you. This is especially true with the things that we keep “just in case”. Look closely into your home and your office. Go through it with a fine toothed comb. What are the things that you are clinging to. That old worn out t-shirt of sentimental value. The gift presented to you by your ex-boyfriend. Rows and rows of books which you hesitate to give away or throw away. Make a decision to dedicate one or several weekends to go through your home and your office. Cover every nook and cranny, whether it’s under the bed, the long forgotten corners, or under the stairways. Get rid of all the clutter that you no longer need. Emptying your life of  all your old, unwanted and unnecessary things, frees up your energy to receive new people and opportunities.

Keep Your life In Running Order

Stop for a moment to think about all the things that need work in your home. Are your faucets leaky. Are you door knobs in order. Maybe your equipment needs fixing. How about that broken light bulb. Did you ever get around to pulling the weeds from your garden like you’ve been meaning to. Make the time to tend to all the things that need fixing in your home as soon it is possible for you. Things that are long pending to be repaired in your home are reflective of the fact that you are not paying attention to things that need repairing in your life. Start to work on them today so that your thought processes whether consciously or otherwise no longer dwell on things that need to be repaired. Free up your to-do list this way, and you will find that your life starts to flow more smoothly in keeping with the orderly way your house now runs.

Clear And Energise Your Entrance

If all the most beautiful, properous, vital and happiest energies in the Universe decided one day to go prospecting some blessed souls today, would your house be one of their top picks. Think about it. How does the entrance to your home look. Does it look bright and inviting, clear and well lit. Or does it look unkempt, untidy, dull and blocked with things that should not have been there in the first place. If opportunities do not flow into your life as freely as you wish they would, take the time to also clear your entrance way. The entrance to your home should always be clean and well maintained and free from clutter. There should be enough lighting for it to be warm and welcoming. When you enter the hearth of your home the first thing that you see should be something that gladdens your heart. Whether it’s a picture or a painting or a beautiful almirah. When your home is beautifully kept and inviting, the Universe will not hesitate for a moment in gifting you with even more light and beauty.

Facelift With Positivity

The colors, images, and objects that you surround yourself with resonant deeply with the technicolor motion picture of your life. Surround yourself with positive images. Choose pictures of smiling, happy people, over sad dour-faced ones. Color your walls with uplifting colors in light warming or cooling shades. Avoid starkness, and extremely bright or dark colors. Your objects d’art should make you smile inwardly or outwardly when you see them. Ensure your homes are bright and well lit with appropriate lighting schemes. Stock your fridge with wholesome, natural produce. Invite natural beauty into the home with plants, flowers and pretty shrubs. Your life starts to look brighter and more positive with the increasing positivity of your home.

Love the Space You Are In

Do you feel an emotional connection with your home. Most people surprisingly don’t and this reflects in the disconnect they feel in their own lives. Learn to love and respect the home that you’ve made for yourself. Change the things about it that you do not like and fill it with more of the things that you do. The more you care for you dwelling spaces, the more you learn to appreciate and be grateful for the things that you already have in your life. An attitude of happiness and gratefulness in the things that you have now is the chief means to receiving even greater abundance and joy right now. Our lives are not in the future or what might be. They are here in this moment which is always and abdundantly full of infinite possibility.

Opening Up To Freshness And vitality

Bring freshness and vitality into your homes by regularly opening out the doors and windows. Allow natural light to lift the energy in your spaces. Spring clean and detox regularly. Maintaining our homes is equivalent to maintaining our lives. The energy and enthusiasm that we put into bringing fresh energy into our homes will eventually show up in the optimistic and happy changes that we are more easily able to make in our own lives.

Shifting the energies of our homes and offices pays rich dividends in the way the energy shifts in our lives. The more you follow these practices, the more you will start to see the changes in your life. And all of them will be positive and uplifting.

In Part II of this series, we will explore a Space Clearing Ceremony which you can perform to turbo-charge the energy in your home.

Untill then, God bless. Much love and happiness.

Finding Your Joy

Do you drag yourself out of bed every morning to do yet another marathon of endless mindless, repetitive things that have become so routine, you find yourself stealing moments where you dream of far away lands or vastly better things. Is that all there is to it, you wonder. The truth is, life can be a joyous, fantastic and utterly incredible experience in every moment of your life.

And how is that possible, you ask? Read on, this blog is for you.

Lesson Nbr 1 : Find Your Passion

We were all are brought into this world with a purpose in mind. When we know and identify this purpose, and align our lives to the achievement of this purpose, it is then that we really start to achieve satisfaction in our lives. What is that you like to do, or have always liked to do. Think about it. What makes you smile , what delights your heart, what makes you feel the happiest in the world. Do you like bringing a smile to other people’s faces ; you are a Joy-Maker!  Do you delight in caring for other souls and helping them through trying situations and struggles ; you are a Kind Humanitarian Soul. Do you love dressing up, wearing beautiful clothes and bringing your  talents into the spotlight; you are a STAR! Maybe you love the sensation of trying out recipes and putting together new and exciting food combinations; you are a Masterchef in the making! Whatever it is you are passionate about, identify, acknowledge and accept that now.

Lesson Nbr 2 : Live Your Passion

Once you’ve identified your passion, find ways to bring this passion of yours to life. Whether you are a single or married with children, you have the potential to reach the highest level in the aspects of life which are important to you. So make the time to plan and live out your dreams now.  If you’ve always wanted to run your own restaurant, start working out your budgets, talk to other people who’ve done it, try out recipes, map interior design in your head, look at tableware. Action is what brings your dreams to life and makes your life the best possible it can be. So make that move and start working on your passion right now.

Lesson Nbr 3 : Rediscover the Child In You

Life was always fun when we were children, we played often , made friends easily and collectively disowned the adult world with glee.  An acquaintance of mine once told me “At heart, we are ALL children, we just look like adults”.

There’s a child buried deep inside you, longing to come out and experience the freedom of joy and happiness. Let him or her out. Take the time to laugh, be silly and absurd. Find, make, and maintain friendships with good people, the kind who you can call at 03:00 am in the morning. When we have caring and supportive friends with whom we can be ourselves, we are able to find a space where we become more safe and secure in ourselves. Do the things that are new and different from your routine and what you are normally used to. If you’ve always taken one route to go work, try an alternative route. Children are spontaneous and flexible. Work on bringing more of these qualities into your life to create a state of positivity and expectancy. And try things that scare you. If you’ve been thinking about bunjee-jumping, but have always been a little fearful of it, why not do it now. Spend more time with happy people, children and small animals, and rediscover the little things in life that made you happy as a child.

Lesson Nbr 4: Change the Way You Look at Life

Examine your thoughts from day to day, and moment to moment. Are they joyous, filled with positivity and brimming with expectation. Or are they negative, whiny, and self-pitying. The way you look at life is reflected in the surroundings you find yourself in. The more happy, joyous and sunny you are, the more situations you will attract into your life that reflect the way you think and feel about yourself. Happiness is a choice , not something that happens to us. We choose to be happy. Every time you find yourself thinking a negative thought, replace it quickly with a positive one, until it becomes a habit and a way of life. It is a simple but basic Law of the Universe. “Like Attracts Like”. Radiate Love, and you will attract more of it. Radiate Joy, and you will attract more of the same into your life.

Lesson Nbr 5 : Be Good To Yourself

You are an incredible being of light and beauty. If you only knew how truly beautiful you are in the eyes of the One Who Made You, you would never look at yourself or your life the same way again. You may think you fall short in so many ways, you may think that your life could be that much better, and you may think that you are so far behind from being the best you can be. But be kind to yourself. You have done the best you could do within the knowledge and awareness that you had. It is never too late to change your path and put yourself on the road to personal greatness. You are bigger than all the foibles and failures that have gone before. Start to make the small changes in your life and slowly, but surely, even you can achieve the life that you’ve always dreamed of.

May God Bless You With Infinite Light and Happiness!

The origins of An Urban Mystic’s Blog

The origins of An Urban Mystic’s Blog

Spirituality seems a concept so far removed from every day life that a lot of us wonder how we could even begin to reconcile the two. In between the dramas, noises and confusions of everyday existence, some quiet time to reflect on who and where we are on our personal path to greatness, seems so difficult to achieve. We think it’s something for which we need to make time for, or something that we could hope to catch a glimpse off on a yoga retreat in some far away land. Others believe, wrongly unfortunately, that it’s something so outright boring and dull, they wouldn’t be caught dead anywhere near it.

On a surface level, we search for money, status, power and all the things we think we need to progress in the real world. But deep inside each one of us, whether we choose to acknowledge it or not, we yearn for a deeper connection to the divine, that something greater outside of us. The siren call to the place we call our original home.

An Urban Mystic’s Blog was designed out of a mini-sized dream to make spirituality more accessible and relevant to the people who live in the real world and face real problems and undergo real situations. Not all of us can afford to go to the mountains and renounce the world in the hope of achieving enlightenment, but that doesn’t mean we cannot find our divinity where we are, in the here and the now. Most of the concepts that are featured within these pages have been broken down into small chewable bite sized portions , easy to read , easy to understand and most importantly easy to apply.

For the some of you who stumbled upon this website, one fey magical day, it will be the start of a wonderful journey. And for the others, it will be a pit-stop on the way to even greater things. Whatever it is, I do hope you find what you’re looking for.

May God bless you with endless love, light and happiness. And I hope you know, dear sweet child of God,  you are more loved that you could possibly know.
